In high school I was in a ceramics class where we had to projects that we could choose what to create. I made a “Papa Bear” reading my favorite book from my childhood “Goodnight Moon.” It ended up winning an award for an art show at our school and it was on display in the showcase window for a year until the new pieces arrived.
On top of ceramics I was also in sculpture, unfortunately it was cut short due to COVID but this was the portfolio I made to carry the homework assignments we received. The requirements were to fill the page with color and different shapes.
In my final year of school I took a college art course. It was for painting and drawing. We dealt with all types of mediums on paper. Including pencil, paint, charcoal, and more. This was one of my final pieces that I never got to finish. I was very fond of this piece since I was never able to create detail in a human face before.
The charcoal pieces we did involved still art. Our teacher would set up different 3D pieces that we would draw from different angles every week. Finding the ability to balance the contrast between the shadows and highlights was a struggle since it was my first time using charcoal. It was fun figuring out how to use a new medium than I had before.
Each graduating class from our high school had the opportunity to design a mural and have the art department create their vision. With COVID happening at the end of my senior year, I was in Student Council and we were in charge of creating the design to relate to our class. Since social distancing was in effect and we were no longer allowed to go to school the art department was not able to do it for us. Myself and 3 other student council member volunteered to finish the 15 foot mural by ourselves. Two of us being in the art department dealt with the majority of the piece while the other two created the “corona virus wave.” Each element in this mural has special meaning to our class I created the whole upper half of the mural including the buildings, sky and mountain involving the Hollywood sign and other elements. Kayla (the other art department student) focused on the four main characters in the front of the army since she spent less hours on it, I finished the rest of the people in the wave. The mural was at my house so I spent roughly 72 hours on it up until the morning of graduation. We brought it to the school with paint still wet for a 9am “celebration.” It now hangs up outside of the gym in the school lobby next to all the other classes who chose to have murals.
