About
I’m from Rochester, New Hampshire and here is a little more about me.
Impact of Art
Growing up as a twin, my sister and I were always told we look alike. Interestingly, people also insisted that my sister resembled my mother but that I looked like my father. Perhaps this is why I soon started developing some of his habits and sharing many of his interests. This included art. He was always so crafty and handy, and taught me about linework in paining long before I had a teacher mention it. Dad would draw scenes on cards, he sculpted, drew, painted, and could use Photoshop. Of course, he was always ready to help me with a project. Recently, I learned that he was posting his art online and had been using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator as well. This blew my mind.
Like my Dad, the impact of art on my life is so much greater than I thought – so much so that I will often lose track of time when working on a project. Hours will go by and I’m still in the same spot, fully invested in the process.
Art and design is so fascinating to me because I can do so much while forgetting about my responsibilities and worries. I thought this was what everyone thought until my
twin sister described it so differently. Sitting there for hours (trying to be as precise and
perfect as I can be), my sister would start complaining about how boring it is within 30-minutes. She couldn’t understand how I would be able to focus on art for hours and hours.
Despite being a twin, having the same friends, participating in the same activities, we do have some differences. She excelled in math and science while I did well in art and history. It is nice to have something so important to myself without constantly being compared to another person, even if that someone is my “copy.”
Creativity
Specific interests that I have in the field of creativity are diverse. My middle school, being as small as it was, never had any art classes or opportunities to be creative.
When I got to high school it was much different. Here, I took so many painting, drawing, sculpture, and ceramics classes, that I graduated in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).
I also participated in many different high school clubs including SALT (Student Athletic Leadership Team) which created the Christmas float. I developed the theme, determined all the needed supplies, and spent all my free time working on it (lunches, study hall, late after school). Additionally, I painted pep rally banners and posters, and created decorations for many dances.
During COVID lockdown, like many students, we couldn’t go to school in person, but we had just committed to creating a class mural, celebrating all the things that made our class special, for the first time since 2002. Determined to see this art project through, my sister, two friends, and I designed and painted it ourselves, at home, during any free time we had. Completed at 5AM the day of graduation, we loaded it up and brought it to school for everyone to see. It probably hadn’t fully dried.
